The sequencer provided by Oxford Nanopore Technologies, a company based in the UK, measures the changes in electrical current that occur when DNA or RNA molecules pass through the nanopore of a protein embedded in a polymer membrane, and decodes the base sequence. As it does not use the fluorescent dyes or DNA polymerases used in existing sequencers, it is characterized by the fact that it can obtain very long sequences from relatively small samples. It is expected to be used for new genome analysis of non-model organisms that have not been analyzed so far, and for genetic analysis of special genomes that are difficult to analyze with conventional next-generation sequencers.
